Tutorial: Editing Your Profile

  1. Make sure that you are logged into the site. If you are logged in, your name will appear at the top of the page on the right side, next to the F.R.C. logo.

  2. If you are logged in, there will be a menu option on the left side of the page labeled ‘My Profile’.

  3. Once you’ve selected the ‘My Profile’ page, you should see a summary of your current profile settings, a button to click if you want to change your profile settings, and a button to click if you want to change your password.

  4. Clicking the ‘Edit Profile’ button opens the profile editor. Here, you can change the displayed name, username, and email address. The name and email address fields cannot be blank.

  5. When you click on the "Save Changes" button, there are several possible outcomes.

If nothing has changed, you will receive a simple notification that nothing has changed and be returned to the previous page.

If there are changes, each of the fields that has changed will be verified against the current list of user profiles. Each user must have a unique name, username, and email address. Entering a new name, username, or email address already in use by another user will produce an error and none of the changes will be made. You will remain on the current page.

If the name or email address fields are blank, that will produce an error and none of the changes will be made. You will remain on the current page.

If there are changes and none of the changes produces an error, you will receive a notification that the changes have been made. You will be returned to the previous page, where the new information will be shown.

  6. If you’ve changed the email address, the system will send a notification message to both the old and new email addresses. This email will inform you of the email address change and remind you that you need to use this new email address when logging into the site.

  7. Clicking the ‘Change Password’ button opens the password editor. Here, you can change your password. All three fields are required.

First, enter your current password in the ‘Current Password’ textbox. This will be verified against your current system password before allowing you to change your password. The actual password will not display on the screen, just a series of placeholders to indicate how many characters have been entered.

  8. Next, enter your new password in the ‘New Password’ textbox. Again, the actual password will not display on the screen, just a series of placeholders to indicate how many characters have been entered.

The new password has to meet the minimum security requirements shown on the right side of the screen to be accepted. To help you meet the requirements, your new password will be validated as it is being entered. Any requirement that is met will be marked with a green check mark (). Any requirement that is not met will be marked with a red X ().

Once all of the requirements have been marked with a green check mark, you have entered a valid password.

  9. Next, confirm your new password in the ‘Confirm New Password’ textbox. Again, the actual password will not display on the screen, just a series of placeholders to indicate how many characters have been entered.

The confirmation password has to match the password entered in the ‘New Password’ above it to be accepted. To help you know that they match, the confirmation password will be validated as it is being entered.

    • If any of the characters entered is incorrect, a red X () will be displayed beside the textbox.
    • If all of the characters entered match, but the confirmation password is shorter than the new password, a grey ellipsis () will be displayed beside the textbox.
    • If all of the characters entered match, and the confirmation password and the new password are the same length, a green check mark () will be displayed beside the textbox.
    • If the confirmation password is longer than the new password, regardless of matching, a red X () will be displayed beside the textbox.

  10. Once all three fields have been filled out and both the new password and the confirmation password have been successfully validated, the ‘Change Password’ button will be enabled.

Select ‘Change Password’ to attempt to save the new password. As noted above, if the ‘Old Password’ field does not match your current password in the system, you will receive an error and remain on the current screen (the password will not be changed). Otherwise, a message will indicate that your password has been updated and the previous screen will be displayed.

  11. On either edit screen, you can click on the ‘Cancel’ button at any time to return to the previous screen without making any changes.
